Many children were once told “do not take candy from strangers” or “do not talk to strangers.” Today, children need to know more. For example, children should know that a child molester is not a man hiding in the shadows in a trench coat. He or she can be a family member, friend, teacher, or coach. A pedophile is someone who has a sexual attraction for young children, and may or may not act on that attraction. A sex offender is someone who has been charged by the police with breaking the law. Child molesters can be male or female, rich or poor, and of any race. Because the safety of your children is of the highest importance, the Attorney General, in consultation with the New Jersey School Boards Association, New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault, New Jersey ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ, New Jersey Education Association and the Division on Women, has created Safety Guides and this site to help you educate your children about sexual crimes against children, and how to reduce their chances of becoming victims of such crimes. |
